After a bout of strong winds, my village lanes are often strewn with twigs adorned in the enchanting beauty of lichen. All it takes is a leisurely walk into the lane by my house to encounter these spectacular organisms.

This particular specimen, a testament to nature's artistry, was dislodged from the mighty oak tree in my own garden

The original was drawn in Froxfield By Nick McMillen in 2021.

  • Lichens are a captivating blend of two life forms—fungus and algae, harmoniously entwined in a symbiotic relationship. Fungi, unable to produce chlorophyll, lack the ability to harvest solar energy like plants. Algae, on the other hand, are skilled in photosynthesis and have formed a partnership with fungi.

    In exchange for a supply of vital nutrients to the fungi, the algae gain protection from harmful ultraviolet light thanks to the structure of the fungi. It's a dynamic where fungi play the dominant role, effectively "farming" the algae to produce the sustenance they need.
