Life Unfurling – Parmotrema Sp. (Drawing)

After strong winds, our village lanes are scattered with twigs adorned in lichen, and all I have to do is step into the lane by my house to encounter these remarkable organisms.

This specific specimen was gathered during a walk with my son.

Lichens are a fascinating combination of two organisms, fungi and algae, engaged in a symbiotic relationship. Fungi lack the ability to produce chlorophyll, preventing them from harnessing energy from the sun as plants do. Algae, on the other hand, are proficient at photosynthesis and have established a partnership with fungi. In exchange for essential nutrients supplied by the fungi, algae receive protection from harmful ultraviolet light due to the fungi's structural properties. It's worth noting that fungi are the dominant partners in this relationship, effectively "farming" the algae to produce the sustenance they require.

  • Compressed charcoal on Fabriano Artistico 300gsm hot press paper
