This tree is one of many ancient yews that grow in Kingley Vale, near Chichester, West Sussex. Some of the yews in the valley are reportedly over 2000 years old.

Kinley Vale is the one of largest yew tree woodlands in Europe and an important habitat for local wildlife.

The site has been used by humans for millennia, with bronze age burial mounds on the surrounding hills and more recently it was used by the Canadian army as a target range in the Second World War.

Yews are another important tree for Nick. He spent 20 years making traditional longbows and yew is the perfect timber for them. The creamy white sap wood has amazing tensile strength and the orange heartwood performs well under compression. Bowyers learnt to harness these properties to produce history defining weapons.
