Queen Elizabeth Oak is a two-metre botanical drawing of one of Britain's oldest and most remarkable ancient trees. The original sessile oak (Quercus petraea) stands on the Cowdray Estate in West Sussex and is thought to be between 800 and 1,000 years old.
Having first encountered the tree over twenty years ago while teaching bushcraft, I always knew I wanted to draw it. Its immense trunk, intricate network of branches and rich bark textures made it an irresistible subject, while its long history and enduring presence gave the project a deeper significance.
Created over five months using Conté Pierre Noire on Fabriano Artistico paper, the drawing became my largest work to date. Every stage, from planning and photographing the tree to drawing, reproduction and framing, was carefully considered to create an artwork that celebrates both the extraordinary character of this ancient oak and the craftsmanship involved in producing it.
To discover the full story behind the creation of this drawing, read my illustrated article, The Making of the Queen Elizabeth Oak Drawing.
